Deck Department

Master
(Captain)

The Master (or Captain) is the overall commander of the ship, holding the ultimate authority and responsibility for the vessel, its crew, passengers, cargo, and the safe navigation and operation of the ship. In the Deck Department, the Master oversees all navigational, operational, and cargo-related activities.

Chief Officer
(First Mate)

The Chief Officer (C/O) or First Mate is the second-in-command after the Master and is the head of the deck department. They are mainly responsible for the cargo operations, deck crew management, and overall maintenance of the vessel.

Second Officer
(Second Mate)

The Second Officer (2/O), also called Second Mate, is typically in charge of navigation and chart work. They usually stand the 12-4 watch (both AM and PM) and are responsible for the ship’s navigational safety and voyage planning.

Third Officer
(Third Mate)

The Third Officer (3/O) or Third Mate is usually the junior-most deck officer and is primarily responsible for safety equipment, life-saving appliances, and may serve as the ship’s safety officer under the Chief Officer’s supervision. They typically stand the 8-12 watch (AM and PM).

Deck Cadet
(Trainee Officer)

A Deck Cadet (or Trainee Officer) is an officer-in-training, undergoing onboard practical experience as part of their maritime education and training. They learn and assist with all aspects of the deck department under the supervision of senior officers.

Bosun
(Boatswain)

The Bosun (or Boatswain) is the senior-most rating in the deck department and acts as the foreman or supervisor of the deck crew (ABs and OSs). The Bosun works under the Chief Officer and ensures that all deck operations and maintenance tasks are carried out efficiently and safely.

Able Seaman

An Able Seaman (AB) is a skilled deck rating who performs a wide range of tasks related to ship maintenance, navigation watchkeeping, mooring, cargo handling, and emergency duties under the supervision of the Bosun and Deck Officers.

Ordinary Seaman

An Ordinary Seaman (OS) is an entry-level deck rating who assists Able Seamen and the Bosun with various deck operations, maintenance, and watchkeeping duties. The OS role is designed to gain experience and learn seamanship skills to eventually qualify as an Able Seaman.

Engine Department

Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer in the Engine Department of a ship or offshore vessel is the senior-most engineer responsible for all engineering operations and maintenance on board. Their roles and responsibilities include both technical and managerial duties.

Second Engineer

The Second Engineer (also called the First Assistant Engineer on some vessels) is the second-in-command in the Engine Department, directly under the Chief Engineer. This role is crucial for ensuring the day-to-day technical operations of the engine room run smoothly and safely.

Third Engineer

The Third Engineer in the Engine Department is typically responsible for overseeing specific areas of machinery, ensuring that equipment operates smoothly, and assisting in maintaining overall engine room operations. They work under the supervision of the Second Engineer and Chief Engineer, playing a key role in day-to-day tasks.

Fourth Engineer

The Fourth Engineer in the Engine Department is typically an entry-level officer responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of engine room equipment. They work under the guidance of senior engineers (Third Engineer, Second Engineer, and Chief Engineer) and are integral to keeping the machinery running smoothly.

Engine Cadet
(Trainee Engineer)

An Engine Cadet (also known as a Trainee Engineer) in the Engine Department is a junior officer or trainee who is undergoing practical training as part of their educational requirements. They assist senior engineers in the daily operations and maintenance of the engine room while gaining hands-on experience to further their career in the maritime industry. The role is a combination of learning, assisting, and gradually taking on more responsibility as they gain experience.

Electrical Officer /
Electro-Technical Officer (ETO)

The Electrical Officer or Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) in the Engine Department is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all electrical and electronic systems onboard a vessel. This role is crucial to ensure the electrical equipment and systems on the ship are functioning properly, which is vital for both the safety and efficiency of the vessel. The ETO works closely with the Chief Engineer and other members of the Engine Department to maintain all electrical and automation systems.

Fitter

The Fitter in the Engine Department plays a critical role in maintaining the mechanical systems on board the vessel. The primary responsibility of a fitter is to ensure that all machinery and equipment are properly maintained, repaired, and kept in good working condition. This role is hands-on and focuses on the mechanical aspects of engine room operations, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and the fabrication of parts as needed.

Motorman / Oiler

The Motorman or Oiler in the Engine Department is primarily responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, and daily operations of the engine room’s machinery and equipment. They are integral to ensuring that the ship’s mechanical systems are functioning smoothly, supporting engineers and other technical personnel in keeping the vessel operational.

Wiper

The Wiper in the Engine Department is an entry-level position primarily responsible for cleaning, assisting with maintenance tasks, and ensuring that the engine room remains in a safe and operational condition. Wipers play a crucial supporting role in maintaining the cleanliness and order of the engine room and assisting more senior crew members with their duties.
